Whether you are exploring the vibrant cities or venturing into its breathtaking wilderness, there is a mode of transport suited to every style of travel in Alberta.

Self Drives

& Car Rentals

Home to some of Canada’s most scenic routes, such as the world-famous Icefields Parkway that winds through the Rocky Mountains, Alberta is ideal for a self-drive. Renting a car for your holiday is an excellent way to take in these majestic landscapes at your own time and pace. In Alberta, you can drive on a full UK driving license and the highways are well-maintained, well-signposted and easy to navigate. All major car rental companies can be found at both Calgary and Edmonton international airports, as well as at multiple city locations. If you are visiting during the winter months or expect snowy conditions, ensure your rental vehicle is equipped with winter tires for safety. Canadians drive on the right-hand side of the road and speed limits are measured in kilometres per hour.

Motorhomes

Touring Alberta by motorhome offers an unbeatable combination of convenience and flexibility. There is a host of campgrounds, located in some of its most scenic spots, where you can easily plug into freshwater, drains and electricity, while enjoying amenities like your own picnic bench and fire pit. To make the most of your motorhome adventure, make sure you research ahead of time where you are allowed to park overnight. Camping in motorhomes is strictly prohibited on private property, in national or provincial parks, wilderness areas or on First Nations reservations, unless you are at a designated site. With the right planning, a motorhome trip is the perfect way to truly immerse yourself in Alberta’s natural beauty.

Motorbikes

Renting a motorbike is one of the most exciting ways to travel around Alberta. Most rental motorbikes come with their own vehicle insurance, offering peace of mind as you hit the open road. The best time to ride is between June and September, when longer days, pleasant weather and stunning nature create the perfect conditions for an unforgettable two-wheeled adventure. This is also when Alberta’s abundant wildlife is most active, adding to the thrill of the journey. Whether you are cruising through the dramatic Rocky Mountains or exploring the striking Badlands, a motorbike allows you to connect with Alberta’s wild side in a way that is both captivating and exhilarating.

Rail Travel

If you prefer to sit back and relax as you journey through Alberta’s magnificent landscapes, rail travel offers a comfortable and scenic choice. VIA Rail, Canada’s national rail service, connects Edmonton to the town of Jasper, providing a front-row seat to admire the spectacular vistas whilst enjoying modern comforts like spacious seats and free wi-fi. For a more luxurious experience, the Rocky Mountaineer offers world-renowned train journeys with routes starting or finishing in Banff and Jasper, making it easy to extend your stay and spend more time discovering Alberta’s iconic destinations. These routes combine Alberta with British Columbia, giving you the opportunity to enjoy the very best of Western Canada’s natural beauty from the comfort of your train carriage.

Shuttles, Transfers & Guided Tours

Shuttles and transfers provide a convenient and stress-free option to explore Alberta. A network of direct services connects key destinations such as Calgary, Banff, Lake Louise, Canmore, Jasper and Edmonton, minimising travel time and eliminating the hassle of parking, which can be limited at star attractions during peak season. For those visiting popular areas like Banff and Jasper, there are numerous guided tour companies offering experiences tailored to sightseeing, wildlife viewing, Indigenous culture and more, ensuring you make the most of your time in Alberta. If you are staying in downtown Calgary or Edmonton, you do not necessarily need a vehicle as many places of interest are within walking distance and taxis are readily available, while Roam Transit offers reliable public transport within Banff and around Banff National Park, making it easy to get around without a car.
